In order to protect the consumer, mandatory information on food packaging is regulated uniformly in the European Union. The information that must be included on every food packaging includes

  • the name of the food

  • the ingredients of the food, including the 14 main substances or products which may cause allergies or intolerances

  • the date of minimum durability or expiry

  • the net quantity

  • name/company name and address of the food business

  • the nutrition labelling

The basis for food labelling is the EU-FIC requirements (European Food Information for Consumers). Special mandatory information, such as the origin, exists for some foods.

The EU regulation on the track and trace of food products has been in force since 2005. This obligation affects farmers, importers, transporters, the food industry as well as food wholesalers and food retailers. Every step from sowing to harvest must be documented. Traceability always refers to a batch that was produced together in one operation. Each batch has a consistent batch identification. So far, the obligation is only valid for food without indication of the best before date and loose food.

How should foods be labeled?

According to EU-FIC, food must be labelled with general mandatory information:

  • The list of ingredients

  • The allergen labelling

  • The shelf life, which includes the best before date, the consumption date and the freezing date

  • Identification of origin, as well as vegetable origin for fats and oils

  • The nutrition labelling

  • The net filling quantity

  • The company address

  • The alcohol content of alcoholic beverages

In addition to the general mandatory information, specific mandatory information must be provided for certain foods:

Imitations must be labelled accordingly to protect the consumer, so the substitute used must be listed directly next to the product name.

Pieces of meat or fish that have been joined together must be labelled with the word "joined together

Energy drinks must contain a caffeine reference.

Ingredients of foods containing engineered nanomaterials must be clearly labelled with the word "nano

The special mandatory information is supplemented by product-specific information. This is regulated by special product regulations.

Packaged food, but also unpackaged food, is usually identified with the help of labels. b+b offers you a complete solution from a single source consisting of label automation and design software, labels, semi- and fully automatic labelling systems and label printing dispensers.

How can I quickly and securely label food with variable data?

The application of labels by hand is usually problematic. Labelling inaccuracies and a high expenditure of time are usually the result.

Increasing demands on the beverage industry make it more difficult to label products. Label printing and dispensing systems enable you to label KEG and beverage kegs precisely, reliably and quickly using different applicators and label transfer modules. The printing and dispensing of the label is done in one system.

Various requirements are necessary for maximum efficiency in your production:

  • required printing speed

  • required donation speed

  • Labeling accuracy

  • Printing options

  • Integration in existing production lines and production lines

The label printing dispensers EDS 420i and 620i meet almost any requirement due to their modular design, a wide range of functions, accessories and applicators.

Thanks to the modularity of the label printing dispenser, you always opt for the best solution in terms of economy.

How can food and its packaging be labeled?

There are different ways and means of labelling food - one of them is the identification by labels.

How can labels promote food sales?

Decorative design of the label should increase the sales of the products. The appearance and design of the label plays a decisive role in the consumer's buying decision.

Food labels are usually used to present the product in the most appetizing and appealing way possible. Often serving or recipe suggestions are depicted on them. Many companies also use the label to advertise other products from their range or to communicate their corporate values and history. High print quality is especially important to make the product look as appetizing as possible.

In addition to the sales promotion aspect, the label serves as an important information carrier in food labelling.

How can labels protect the consumer in food?

Labels are important information carriers, especially in the food industry. According to the EU-FIC, foodstuffs must be labelled with appropriate general and product-specific information - thus the label serves as an indispensable source of information. For the label itself there are also food law regulations regarding the label material and the label adhesive.

The individual requirements of the food manufacturer and the general as well as the product-specific labelling regulations must be observed when using labels.

b+b offers different semi-automatic and fully automatic standard systems for the labelling of food:

In addition to our standard labelling machines, we also offer corresponding special solutions - tailored to your product and packaging formats as well as your requirements. Simply contact us.

Why are food products labelled with closure labels? What functions do closure labels have?

Closure labels for food have three functions. Firstly, they serve as decorative labels. Often jars or tins are provided with closure labels, e.g. jams or honey jars.

Besides the design aspect of the product, closure labels (tamper evident) provide protection for the consumer. They provide proof of first opening. If the label is damaged, the consumer can conclude that the product has already been opened. The nature of the label material and the label adhesive play an important role in this respect.

Transparent closure labels are used to reseal products that have already been opened. These are often used for products packed in plastic and are used to ensure that the food can be stored well sealed.

Depending on the function, the correct label material and label adhesive must be selected. Reclosure labels differ greatly from perforated closure labels, which are intended to provide a first opening indication.

The manual application of perforated closure labels usually results in the labels being applied inaccurately or the label being damaged before application.

b+b offers the complete solution from one source for secure closure labelling. In addition to the closure labels b+b offers you the suitable labelling system for your products:

Basically nearly all standard systems of b+b can be extended in such a way that these can apply closure labels. For special requirements we are pleased to offer you a special solution. We are looking forward to your contact request.

In the warehouse logistics of beverage manufacturers, specific and legal requirements apply to the identification of the load carrier. Pallets, for example, must be clearly marked so that downstream processes in the supply chain, such as shipping or distribution, can be designed efficiently.  Pallets ready for dispatch must be marked in conformity with GS1. The pallets can be marked on one, both or three sides with GS1-compliant transport labels. For quality assurance purposes, various containers must also be provided with a cover label (tamper evident).
