Cosmetic products also have a kind of ingredient list - this is comparable to the labelling of packaged food. The ingredients must be stated on the product in written form. The background to this is to protect the consumer as much as possible. He has the possibility to check the cosmetic product for critical substances. The basis for the labelling of cosmetics is an international agreement called International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). The ingredients of a product, such as a cream or deodorant, must be listed in decreasing order according to their percentage by weight. The more of an ingredient is contained, the further up it has to be listed. This applies to all substances that make up more than 1% of the product.

In the case of an allergy, the consumer should know the INCI name of the corresponding substance. In this way he can avoid the danger of coming into contact with the allergen relevant to him.

Which labelling solutions are suitable for pharmaceuticals?

Cosmetic products must be labeled with their ingredients according to the INCI agreement.

Indication of the shelf life for cosmetic products

If cosmetics cannot be stored for longer than 30 months, they must have a best before date in the EU. Instead of the wording "best before" an egg timer can also be used as a symbol with the date.

Cosmetics that have a shelf life of more than 30 months do not have to be labeled with your best before date. These must be marked with an indication of the period of use after opening the product. The symbol of an open cream jar is used for this. If, for example, the product can be used 12 months after the first opening, this is indicated by the indication "12M" on the cosmetic packaging. Depending on the product, the time period may vary.

Products that have a shelf life of more than 30 months after opening and do not open or are completely used up do not need this information. The information regarding the minimum durability or the durability after the first opening helps the consumer to protect himself against risks and to better estimate the safe use of the product.

Labeling of fragrances

Fragrance and aroma substances for perfuming products can be summarized under the term perfume or aroma. In contrast to the ingredients, these do not have to be listed individually. There are a total of 26 fragrances that can most often cause allergic reactions in humans. A labeling requirement applies to these. The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety provides a list of documents that require labeling.

In the following diagram you will find all the important elements that should be present on the label for labelling cosmetics. The information must be indelible, easily legible and clearly visible.

In addition to the labeling of ingredients, fragrances and shelf life information, labels have the function of providing strong buying incentives through their appearance. Depending on the design, they convey the image and values of the company and should be appealing to the buyer.

Labeling plays an important role in addressing and interest of the consumer - this requires labeling that is perfectly tailored to the product. In the cosmetics industry, transparent labels are often used to label the products - these must also be processed safely. It is important that the speed is not negatively affected by the high precision and labeling accuracy, so that a large number of cosmetic packaging can be labeled.

b + b offers a wide variety of semi-automatic and fully automatic solutions for labeling a wide variety of cosmetic packaging. Whether jars, cans, vials, tubes, ampoules - with the labeling systems from b + b, different formats can be labeled precisely and precisely at high speed. Rapid changeover to other product formats simplify the production process.

In addition to the standard solutions for labeling and labeling your products, b + b also offers special solutions. Basically, all labeling systems can be expanded according to the serialization requirement. We would be happy to advise you - just contact us.

Whether crucibles, ampoules, tubes, vials or other packaging formats: intact sealing labels on the packaging opening give the consumer the certainty that the product has not been opened before. The pharmaceutical industry has been committed to tamper-evident labeling since February 2019

The label material and in particular the pressure sensitive adhesive is important when choosing. This should be heat-resistant, solvent-resistant and moisture-resistant to ensure that the label cannot be removed from the folding box. The label must be such that it self-destructs and leaves visible residues on the cosmetic packaging.

The presence of the anti-tamper protection can be checked by cameras, light barriers and other control units. Incorrectly labeled products are sorted out via a reject station.

b + b offers you the complete solution for tamper evident labeling of cosmetic products, whether jars, boxes, vials, tubes or other packaging formats - various manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic solutions for tamper evident labeling as well as sealing labels:

Product tracing is also becoming increasingly important in the cosmetics industry. In the case of cosmetic products too, counterfeit products are becoming increasingly common, which damage the company's image and lead to lost sales. The economic damage is enormous.

In addition to counterfeiting, product recalls can also seriously damage the company's image or brand. In particular, due to the increasing communication speed through social media and the digitization of communication, information is being disseminated ever faster and can lead to major damage to the image. Through product labeling and product tracking, the paths of the product can be traced faster and a product recall can be carried out faster.

An aggregation of cosmetic products is not mandatory. In order to ensure complete traceability, the aggregation of the packaging bundles, boxes and pallets makes sense. In the aggregation, a "mother-child relationship" is created between the individual products and the packaging unit. This makes it easier to understand the individual medication and makes its product path more transparent. This simplifies logistics processes, product recalls can be carried out faster, the reporting of stolen products can be carried out faster and customs offices can record the entry of delivery contents more quickly.

b + b offers various manual, semi-automatic to fully automatic aggregation systems and hybrid systems.

Our hybrid systems are used for serialization and aggregation. Both take place in one system. Often only small batches of certain products are serialized, which also have to be aggregated depending on the target market. All systems are available or expandable with 1 to n aggregation levels.

Aggregation systems:

How can aggregation and cartoning processes be made more effective?
The manual sealing of cartons is usually very time-consuming and leads to an interruption of the packaging process.  Starting at 40 cartons per day, it makes sense to automate the closing process - this can reduce the required working time by up to 70 %.

b+b offers you a solution for carton sealing and labelling - carton sealing and labelling machine in one - SCC-AG - semi-automatic cartoning and aggregation The flat carton is opened by the operator and placed in the machine. The lower flaps are automatically folded and closed by the machine. The upper flaps are closed by the operator and then conveyed via the transport rollers to the sealer - here it is closed with self-adhesive adhesive material. Depending on requirements, the system can be equipped with a side or top labeler.

Optionally, the system can also serve as an aggregation unit by means of appropriate scanners and cameras. We would be pleased to advise you.

The logistics of cosmetic manufacturers have specific and legal requirements for labeling the load carrier. For example, pallets must be clearly labeled so that downstream processes in the supply chain, such as shipping or distribution, can be designed efficiently. The ready-to-ship pallets must be labeled in accordance with GS1. The pallets can be labeled on one side, on both sides or on three sides with GS1-compliant transport labels. To ensure quality, various containers must also be provided with a corner label (tamper evident).
